It's like losing a favorite old uncle that was really cool and showed you everything you needed to know growing up, and then some.

GeoCities was the first place I learned HTML. Their tutorials started me down the path I am currently on and helped to introduce me to the wonder of online publishing. I left GeoCities only because I didn't like the changes that Yahoo made to it after the acquisition. As a result, I haven't been a big fan of Yahoo ever since. Now, Yahoo is shutting it down rather than helping it to evolve and keep up with the pace of Internet 2.0. Very sad, but not unexpected for Yahoo.

Goodbye Geocities! Thank you for providing me with the knoweldge and opportunity to start on the path of web publishing and information sharing. You will be remembered!

Those were the days... I remember putting a web site on Geocities, and having to change, save, upload, view and then change, save, upload and view dozens of time until it was right :-) But it was great, and a big piece of history. I only wonder if and when we will be talking about the end of Facebook, Twitter, Google, and so many other things we are now using, and can not imagine going away.
