It won't do anyone any harm "to give up the luxury of having all types of produce year round" - it is an expectation and assumption (particularly prevalent in the US) that needs to be challenged. People will feel better if they become more attuned to seasonal living again.

'Landshare' was commissioned and financed by Channel 4 in the UK, inspired by an item in the TV show 'River Cottage'. It is an attempt to amplify an existing behaviour, make it more accessible and spread best practice. That it has come into being through a TV network is a good indication of how widespread and diverse can be the forces which drive this kind of economic innovation.

For folks on hyperlocavore.com - they aim is to start up right away at the block level, with friends, family and neighbors. I supply collaborative tools and support, but my emphasis is getting people out their doors and into their neighborhoods! Still - it's helpful to have online tools for collaboration, planning etc... We can help neighbors, neighborhood organizations, service or religious groups get up and running tomorrow! In fact - that's what's happening!

We opened the doors in January 09 and the reaction and activity has been incredibly validating for an idea I had been hanging onto for most of my life.

People clearly want more community, more resilience and more neighborliness... I'm so so happy to be able to help!

Paul, thanks for the great research and links. I think doing it closer to home aligns with collaborative best practice. I did a recent review on Alisa Smith's bestselling book The 100 Mile Diet - A Year of Local Eating, at... http://www.collaborativejourneys.com/archives/1009. I think the whole urban gardens thing is great.
