Twitter Trending Topics

If you’re a Twitter user, you’ve probably wondered how seemingly irrelevant hashtags make it to the top of the Trending Topics list. How could #meowmonday be so popular? (Especially when #nopantstuesday is less than 24 hours away!).  A few days ago I came across this interesting illustration outlining the ‘anatomy of hashtag meme relevance over time’:

There’s probably a relationship to news moving through the sharemarket, in as much as some people will buy a share because they are genuinely expecting growth, then others will buy because of the price signal given by the first lot, then others will start talking about why this thing is suddenly showing such excitement.

Then it all starts rolling down the other side of the hill.
