People gain status and a feeling of satisfaction from buying goods and services for their avatar to enjoy. I'm guessing it's a cheap thrill; lose yourself in the virtual world and become a movie star or athlete or successful businessperson - and gain their perks as well. And it costs very little. Easy to ridicule these people, but there are powerful personal forces at work here.
