Gmail is good (sometimes a little creepy). I'd only adbandon LinkedIn for something that is a lot better AND allows me to import my LinkedIn contacts. I checked it out and it seems focussed on job search, which makes an interesting dillema. Is it ok to use it while at work? LinkedIn is networking (which, of course, could lead to job search) so it offers a lot of business applications. Still, essentially it means that your resume and some nice references are available for millions of people to see...employers are not all happy about that. Yes, most new tools are a waste of time, but some have proven to be better than older versions (like Gmail after Yahoo).
