Learning from the Nano (the car, not the iPod)

Just a quick heads up that John Hagel and John Seely Brown have a great little article in BusinessWeek, which talks about lessons Western executives can learn from Tata’s $2,500 Nano. All I’m going to give you from the article are the four subtitles, which should pique the interest of wikinomics readers:

1. Think outside the patent box

2. A modular design revolution

3. “Open Distribution” Innovation

4. Welcoming users back into the design loop

As always, John and John are well worth reading… are there any other lessons from the Nano that jump off the page?

The last thing the world needs is extremely cheap cars without catalytic converters. I hope this business fails quickly.

The big 3 have shopped outside the country for a long time not looked into the trade laws they ignored so they could show short term profits flipped management that obviously thought filling there pockets before vacating was a way to build a company [Example their own CEO gives himself over a million when the comps. value drops to half]. The people they used to support[us]the external American suppliers were ignored. The same people that purchased the product they assemble can no longer afford it [ Americans]! But are expected to bail them out with are tax dollars so they can do it to us again? So after the economic structure starts to crumble and the world trade doors are open why shouldn’t we allow the new Tata motor cars in. Or the Bajaj autos. Our own home grown companies promoted it!! They are emission friendly and do meet the impact levels required. The prices can’t be beet either! They are thinking more about envireomental issues than we are! Lets face it driving a cab and a half as a daily driver does not make sence as practical or enviro

They have put us in a position where we have to face a new reality. We are in a new economy! These companies we trusted were operating with their own best interests in mind. Suddenly they are worried about a new competition. When they were on top they had no fear so when do we get to address our own best interests!! P.S they are going to catalyst if you get to see this Ben!
