The fact that he is moderate on many issues and votes as an independent makes him scary to the democrats and infuriating to hard core conservatives. He is part of the silent generation (the one before the Baby Boom), the only generation in US history never to have one of its members serve as President (although three of its members have been Canadian Prime Ministers), so he is their last chance. He appeals to the Net Gen as well. He was a regular guest on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart before it was cool.
